Hoverboards used to be a dream of the future. But Lexus just unveiled the first functional hoverboard. And rumors have circulated about the technology behind it.

Yesterday, they finally revealed the inner workings. Called the “Slide,” the hover effect comes from repulsion between two magnets.

The above video explains exactly how Lexus managed this feat. The hoverboard forms a magnetic field that creates a repulsion against the ground. Liquid nitrogen cools off the superconductors.

Some skeptics argue that the hoverboard only create the allusion of hovering. True, Lexus used superconductors to create the repulsion over specific pavement. But the board hovers, above the ground.

The date from “Back to the Future” is only a few months away. The Lexus unveil will bring that world closer to a reality.

So we might not be “Back to the Future” quite yet, but we’re headed in the right direction. Let’s see what happens on October 21, 2015.

Maybe Lexus will unveil a car that hovers.
